Average Cost of Plastic Surgery
Breast enlargement surgery is the third most popular aesthetic procedure among women, with nearly 40,000 cases being performed by plastic surgeons annually, according to 1994 statistics by the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
The Procedure
Breast augmentation can result in larger, shapelier women's breasts. Women who have uneven breasts, breasts they feel are too small, misshapen breasts from pregnancy or aging, or others who have undergone mastectomies can benefit from breast augmentation.
Today, surgeons use implants made of silicone shells and filled with saline solution to implant either directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle, giving breasts a fuller and more natural contour.

Breast Lift
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts--at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.)
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume--for example, after pregnancy--breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

Breast Reduction
Women plagued by abnormally large or sagging breasts are candidates for breast reduction surgery, a procedure to reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, glandular tissue and skin. In some cases insurance covers the procedure because large breasts can result in back pain and other health problems.
Men also can suffer with abnormally large breasts. Causes include aging, as men's testicular function declines; medication use, such as those that affect male hormone levels; and underlying disease, including tumors. Once the presence of underlying disease has been ruled out, doctors can help men reduce the size of their breasts by using medications or a breast reduction surgery.
The procedure involves removing fat and breast tissue and is similar to the procedure used for women. More than 4,400 men underwent breast reduction surgery in 1994, according to ASPRS statistics.
The surgery for both men and women usually lasts between two and four hours, and, based on an individual patient's overall health, they may remain overnight in the Premiere Center's in-office recovery facility.
The side effects of surgery include temporary pain, swelling, bruising or numbness. Some women who undergo the procedure before their childbearing years might lose their ability to breast-feed.
Most patients are back to work and non-physical social activities in about two weeks. It may take several weeks before patients can begin strenuous sports.
Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts". Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men.
It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast over development, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
